Caramelize the Onions: Heat a skillet over medium heat and pour in the olive oil. Once the oil is shimmering, add the thinly sliced onions along with a pinch of salt. Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, until they achieve a soft, golden-brown color, which should take about 15-20 minutes. Once they're caramelized, stir in the balsamic vinegar and sugar. Continue cooking until the liquid reduces and coats the onions beautifully. Remove the skillet from heat and set the caramelized onions aside.
Prepare the Beef Patties: While your onions are caramelizing, take the ground beef and divide it into 4 equal portions. Shape each portion into a patty, making sure to season both sides generously with salt and pepper. To prevent the patties from puffing up during cooking, press a small indentation in the center of each one.
Cook the Sliders: In a separate clean skillet or on a grill set to medium-high heat, place the patties. Cook one side for about 3-4 minutes or until a golden crust forms. Carefully flip the patties, then place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each one. Continue cooking for another 3-4 minutes, or until the cheese is melty and the beef is cooked to your preferred doneness.
Assemble the Sliders: Slice the slider buns in half. On each bottom bun, place a beef patty topped generously with the caramelized onions. Finish the assembly by adding a fresh handful of arugula or baby spinach for a delightful crunch.
Add Sauces: If you'd like to add some zing, drizzle a bit of BBQ sauce or spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on the inside of the top burger bun before placing it on top.
Finish: Gently press down the top bun on the sliders to hold everything in place. Serve the sliders right away, while they're still hot and juicy!
